These days every other song seems to be about marijuana or at least mention it. Hey, it\u2019s legal in so many places now, what\u2019s so cutting edge about that?<\/p>\n

Way back in the early days of popular music, musicians had to be a bit more clever in their references about marijuana because it was illegal coast-to-coast (yes, even California).<\/p>\n

Steve Miller openly sang about being \u201ca toker\u201d in \u201cThe Joker,\u201d but didn\u2019t mention what he was toking. Led Zeppelin mentioned<\/a> in passing that a girl \u201csmoked my stuff\u201d in \u201cGoing to California,\u201d but didn\u2019t define \u201cstuff.\u201d But everyone knew what they were singing about.<\/p>\n

Songs About Marijuana<\/h2>\n

As this list shows, some songs might employ linguistic subterfuge, but they clearly were about something other than romance. Still, people didn\u2019t always get it. After reading this, you will.<\/p>\n

\u201cPuff The Magic Dragon,\u201d Peter, Paul and Mary<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just kidding! This song is most definitely not<\/em> about marijuana, as Peter, Paul and Mary have maintained for decades. It\u2019s a simple song about the innocence of childhood. But the \u201cpuff\u201d<\/a> and \u201cLittle Jackie Paper\u201d references – well, there\u2019s no convincing some that this song isn\u2019t really about weed. But it\u2019s totally not.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Spinach Song,\u201d Julia Lee<\/strong><\/p>\n

This one comes from the 1930s. Apparently, in those days, spinach was a code word for marijuana. \u201cI didn\u2019t like it the first time, but oh how it grew on me,\u201d Lee sings<\/a>. She\u2019s not talking about eating her vegetables. It\u2019s interesting to note that this also was about the time Popeye was invented. He ate spinach to get strong – and smoked a pipe. Just saying.<\/p>\n

\u201cGot To Get You Into My Life,\u201d The Beatles<\/strong><\/p>\n

Paul McCarthy remains one of the most famous marijuana lovers in the world – or, at least, he was at the height of his fame as a Beatle. But \u201cGot To Get You Into My Life\u201d was one of his first, if subtle, musical forays<\/a> into proclaiming that love. Like, literally. He told author Barry Miles for his book \u201cPaul McCartney: Many Years from Now\u201d that the song is \u201cactually an ode to pot, like someone else might write an ode to chocolate or a good claret.”<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to imagine someone singing, \u201cDid I tell you I need you every single day of my life?\u201d about chocolate, but we get the picture.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlong Comes Mary,\u201d The Association<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you were paying attention, had even a mild interest in marijuana and saw the name \u201cMary\u201d in a song, that was a sign. The Association released this single in the late 1960s, and few caught on to what it was really about. \u201cEvery time I think that I’m the only one who’s lonely, someone calls on me.\u201d it\u2019s Mary, and it\u2019s not the girl next door.<\/p>\n

Another of their well-known songs, \u201cWindy,\u201d<\/a> also could be interpreted in many, ah, interesting ways. \u201cWho\u2019s reaching out to capture a moment?\u201d Who, indeed.<\/p>\n

\u201cPass the Kouchie,\u201d The Mighty Diamonds<\/strong><\/p>\n

This song became famous because Musical Youth remade it. But the Mighty Diamonds recorded the original <\/a>in 1982. But that Musical Youth remake made it sound so upbeat and fun that many people sort of missed the point that, yeah, they were talking about passing around a joint. On the left-hand side, as it turned out. The 1980s were a lot weirder than people think.<\/p>\n

\u201cMary Jane,\u201d Rick James<\/strong><\/p>\n

This might seem like a love song to a girl – but, of course, it\u2019s not. In 1978, you could reference \u201cMary Jane\u201d and not everyone knew immediately that you were talking about marijuana. James proclaims his love as strongly as McCartney: \u201cShe turns me on with her love and takes me to paradise.\u201d The 1970s were exactly<\/em> as weird as people think.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s quaint these days to consider the lengths artists went to conceal a song about marijuana. But you can\u2019t help but admire their cleverness – no matter how obvious they were being, in retrospect.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
