They are seeking to have the ban lifted so they can use the platform to run advertisements that educate New Yorkers about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispensaries.com\/blog\/new-mexico-new-york-both-legalize-recreational-marijuana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">legal adult-use cannabis<\/a>. Officials expect sales to start in New York in late 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to TikTok, Chris Alexander, executive director of the New York Office of Cannabis Management (OCM), asked the social media company to remove its ban on any ad that mentions the word \u201ccannabis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re running our Cannabis Conversation public education ads on billboards, on subways, on TV, and all over social media. But not on TikTok, which rejected our ads,\u201d the OCM <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nys_cannabis\/status\/1529841042824077314?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1529841042824077314%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.marijuanamoment.net%2Fnew-york-marijuana-regulators-ask-tiktok-to-stop-banning-cannabis-education-advertising%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> in a Tweet. \u201cSo, we sent them a letter demanding they allow cannabis education ads on their platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>TikTok Is Owned By Chinese Multinational Corporation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>TikTok is wildly popular around the world and has become such a cultural icon that even \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d made a parody of what it\u2019s like to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v8jHMyNBMYU&amp;t=40s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scroll <\/a>through the video platform. The company is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese-owned company headquartered in Beijing. In China, the service is known as Douyin.<\/p>\n<p>In his letter, Alexander wrote that the OCM hoped to use advertisements on TikTok to educate people in New York about what a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispensaries.com\/marketplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">legal cannabis marketplace<\/a> will mean to them and how to use the system legally.\u00a0However, the TikTok cannabis ad ban resulted in the service rejecting the ads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne report indicates 75 percent of TikTok users are between the ages of 18 and 34, a demographic we are attempting to target with our public education campaigns,\u201d the letter <a href=\"https:\/\/cannabis.ny.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2022\/05\/letter-from-new-yorks-office-of-cannabis-management-to-tiktok-5.23.22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">states<\/a>. They added that this group also includes parents and caretakers \u201cwho deserve access to the tools we\u2019re providing to help them discuss the risk of cannabis with the youth in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexander also noted that the\u00a0public health education campaign delivers a message on how it is \u201cunsafe and illegal\u201d to drive while impaired by cannabis.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Social Media and the Cannabis Industry<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As noted by Marijuana Moment, the relationship between social media companies and the cannabis industry and industry regulators has \u201cproven complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, the California Bureau of Cannabis Control has complained about getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/is-facebook-shadow-banning-marijuana-pages-including-government-ones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cshadow banned\u201d<\/a> by Facebook, with their profile pages not showing up on conventional searches. At one point, Facebook said it would loosen its restrictive cannabis policies, \u201cbut it\u2019s unclear what steps it&#8217;s taken to achieve that,\u201d Marijuana Moment reported.<\/p>\n<p>One big exception is the Amazon-owned video game service, Twitch. It changed its policy to allow users to keep cannabis-related handles on the service. Twitch has 150 million active monthly users.<\/p>\n<p>Consuming cannabis is allowed on Twitch as long as streamers live where cannabis is legal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/dariosabaghi\/2022\/02\/15\/twitch-includes-references-to-marijuana-under-new-username-policy\/?sh=244e60e4d2c3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to Forbes.
