Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura has made headlines once again, this time for his bold venture into the burgeoning cannabis market. With Minnesota still navigating the complexities of retail cannabis sales following the legalization of marijuana for adults in 2023, Ventura is seizing the opportunity to launch his own line of cannabis edibles.

Teaming up with Retro Bakery, based in suburban Minneapolis, Ventura is set to introduce his signature brand of hemp-derived THC edibles under the banner of Jesse Ventura Farms. In a statement accompanied by a background of rock music, Ventura expressed his enthusiasm for entering the cannabis industry, citing its profound impact on his family’s life.

“Cannabis saved my family’s life,” Ventura declared in a video released on Wednesday. “And now it’s time for me to return to the cannabis world.” He had previously said he wanted to be a player in the emerging Minnesota cannabis industry.

Jesse Ventura Has Been a Longtime Supporter of Cannabis

Ventura has been vocal about the medicinal benefits of cannabis, particularly in managing his wife’s seizures, according to sources cited by the Associated Press. The announcement of Ventura-branded edibles has stirred anticipation among cannabis enthusiasts, with Retro Bakery gearing up for pre-orders starting April 1.

Ventura’s journey into the cannabis business adds another chapter to his eclectic career, which includes stints as a professional wrestler and actor. Notably, Ventura’s political legacy includes being one of the earliest governors in the United States to openly advocate for marijuana legalization.

Ventura testified in favor of legal cannabis in Minnesota before state lawmakers. In addition to his personal story, Ventura argues that cannabis legalization is about individual liberty. He argues that adults should be able to choose what they put in their bodies, similar to alcohol, as long as it doesn’t harm others.

He criticizes the failed policy of cannabis prohibition, arguing it creates a black market and fuels criminal activity. He also often points out the irony of how people can legally consume alcohol, a more dangerous substance in his view, but not cannabis.

Minnesota Has Yet to Launch a Regulated Cannabis Market

Minnesota’s legalization of recreational marijuana last year marked a significant milestone, making it the 23rd state to do so. However, the path to full-scale retail sales has hit roadblocks, with the state’s top cannabis regulator acknowledging delays in drafting regulations and issuing licenses.

While personal use and cultivation of marijuana within specified limits became legal in Minnesota last August, the legal status of sales remains murky. Presently, only a handful of on-reservation shops owned by tribes have the legal authority to sell recreational marijuana, thanks to tribal sovereignty exemptions from state regulations.

Ventura’s foray into the cannabis industry underscores the evolving landscape of marijuana legalization and its economic opportunities. With his brand set to make waves in the market, Ventura’s venture serves as a reminder of the transformative potential of cannabis and the complex journey toward its widespread acceptance and regulation.
